Structure of the Degree

The degree consists of 180 credit points, 120 of which are gained through coursework and 60 derive from a dissertation. The taught course component comprises 6 units, each of 20 credit points. These units are taught on an intensive basis during weekends (normally on Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays). Each 20 credit unit consists of a mandatory pre-unit task, 15 hours of contact time and a tutorial to discuss the assignment. The latter may be an individual meeting with the tutor or students may choose to meet with the tutor in small groups.

Taught Units
Introduction to Educational Inquiry
Managing Change
Managing People
Quality and Improvement in Education
Contemporary Perspectives on Learning

Dissertation

You will also submit a dissertation, not exceeding 15,000 words in length, on a topic in the area of education management, which you will choose in consultation with a tutor. The dissertation, which will usually involve a small-scale empirical enquiry, provides you with a major opportunity to explore in some depth a topic of relevance to your professional practice. Unit 6, Developing as an Educational Researcher, will help you to prepare for your dissertation and you will be allocated a dissertation supervisor who will support you in your research and writing.

Period of Study

The 6 taught units will be presented over a period of just under one year, after which you will begin the work for your dissertation. The minimum period of study is two years although it is possible for the period to be extended to five years.

Admission Requirements

An honors degree or equivalent recognized by the University plus a minimum of one year appropriate professional experience.
