Professional Development Seminar #12: 如何提升教師身心健康及工作滿意度研討會 (Promoting Wellbeing and Job Satisfaction for Teaching Staff)

The seminar received an overwhelming response with more than 20 participants. The seminar was kicked off by an opening speech delivered by Dr. John Leung, Director of School of Continuing and Professional Education. He gave an inspirational and motivational opening speech with a very interesting and meaningful story of educational philosophy. Then, the speaker, Dr. Roger Kwan, gave a talk about the role of teachers in helping our fellow students. The speaker talked not only philosophy of education but life of philosophy using western and eastern perspective. The knowledge and energy of the speaker kept all participants engaged. There was an active discussion among all participants after the talk. The participants found the seminar very enjoyable and fruitful.

Professional Development Seminar #11: The Major Affordances and Impact of IT in Education

Speaker: Dr. John Leung, Director, School of Continuing and Professional Education (SCOPE), CityU

With the wide applications of zoom in teaching and learning, many educationists have developed new perspectives of on-line learning. Dr. John shared the seven major affordances of IT in education. In particular, he also talked about how IT can afford to implement the pedagogy such as recursive feedback and co-creation of knowledge. The seminar was well attended by over 30 participants. The responses were very encouraging. The knowledge and energy of the speaker kept all participants engaged and participants were encouraged to discuss and share ideas with others. Very useful information and insights were delivered and participants enjoyed the seminar very much. After the talk, there were active discussions during the Q&A session.

Orientation Session for Part-time Teaching Staff (2021-2022)

An orientation session for part-time lecturers was successfully held on 17 September 2021 at L1-2610 from 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm to network with fellow teaching and professional staff, and to receive updates on the latest developments of SCOPE. The orientation session was kicked off by a welcome speech given by Dr. John Leung, Director of SCOPE. Dr. Leung also gave a presentation about SCOPE's programme operations and the future development of SCOPE. After Dr. Leung's presentation, Dr. Paul Corrigan, senior education development officer of Talent and Education Development Office (TED), City University of Hong Kong, introduced staff development courses offered by TED. It was followed by Ms. Mimi Chan, Academic Services Manager, who outlined and discussed the important administrative matters a part-time teaching staff should pay attention. The PTL Corner, an e-portal on the SCOPE’s website, was also introduced to the attendees. Finally, the orientation was ended with a group photo and networking with each other. It was a wonderful event for both current and new part-time teaching staff to mingle with the management and all participants enjoyed the orientation very much.

Professional Development Seminar #10: Lessons during the Pandemic: e-Learning Matters
疫症大流行期間的電子學習課堂

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers and students around the globe continue education remotely with the use of information technologies. City University of Hong Kong was one of the front runners to transition from physical classes to synchronous online teaching and learning (also known as CityU-Learning) in 8 days. While the pandemic persists, the extensive use of e-learning tools broadens from lectures and tutorials to laboratory work, practicums, and examinations. A revolution in education has been progressing with the contributions of all educators and learners. The seminar will reflect on what we did in 2020 and before to empower this education revolution, review the lessons learnt, and predict the new normal of teaching and learning after the pandemic.
為應對COVID-19大流行,全球師生都使用資訊科技進行遙距教育。香港城市大學為電子學習先驅,八天內即可從實體課堂過渡到同步在線教學(亦稱為CityU-Learning)。當今疫症大流行仍然持續,電子學習工具的使用範圍更趨廣泛,已從課堂講授、個別指導,擴展至實驗室、實習和考試。一場劃時代的教育革命,正通過教師和學生的貢獻不斷發展。本講座將分享我們在2020年及之前的工作如何推動這場教育革命,並通過回顧經驗、反思教訓,預測後疫症時代的教學新常態。

知識管理 (Knowledge Management)是在1990年代中期開始在全球學術與商業引起討論的概念,主要針對個人及社群所擁有的顯性和隱性知識的確認、創造、掌握、使用、分享及傳播,以進行積極及有效的管理,涵蓋固有理論及應用層面,包括學習型組織、企業文化、資訊科技應用及人事管理等。知識管理概念通常與企業的策略發展具有關係,不單在現今企業上的實踐愈來愈受到重視,在非商業上的應用亦很廣泛。在此六十分鐘的演講中,講者會介紹知識管理的基本概念,及如何利用知識管理的策略或方法去協助 教師發展教學能力、技巧與經驗,知識管理可成為促進教師專業 成長的有效工具。講者亦會討論在現今網絡科技先進的世界,知識管理扮演何種重要的角色。

Professional Development Seminar #8: Training Workshop on ZOOM

21 September 2020 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
In order to prevent the novel coronavirus from spreading on campus, the University announced on 27 January 2020 that we will move to an interactive online learning environment starting from 7 February 2020 until further notice. All classes will be delivered online and in real time, according to the original timetables. The interactive online learning classroom will be conducted through Zoom via the Canvas. As such, SCOPE arranged a tailor-made training workshop for Part-time teaching staff on 21 September 2020. The response was encouraging and attendees found the workshop very useful and helpful to their online teaching.

Professional Development Seminar #7: How AI is changing the education industry?

2 February 2020 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm Webinar
Due to the outbreak of novel coronavirus, the seminar was held online using ZOOM. At the beginning of the seminar, the speaker, Mr. Benny Lam gave a brief introduction about the definition of artificial intelligence (AI) and outlined the major milestones of AI. After introducing the impacts of AI towards the employability in education industry, topics on the Big Data, Deep Learning, Machine Learning, AI and Blockchain were presented to the audiences. Then, applications of AI in learning processes and the technologies required for AI-based education were explored and discussed. Finally, a comparison of practical and AI teaching systems was provided to audience to conclude the seminar. Audiences raised several inspiring questions such as “How does the certificate of somebody be protected in Blockchain from participating universities?”, “Is it true that AI solution all based on statistics?”, " Is AI a move forward of data mining?", "What is the possibility of having AI to help marking assignments and exams?", "How AI handles uncertainty?" during the Q & A session. This webinar finally ended with much appreciation messages from audiences in the chat room.

Professional Development Seminar #6: The ABC’s of OBTL, 2 November 2019

In this seminar, Dr. Paul Corrigan, Senior Educational Development Officer in EDGE, CityU, introduced Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs), Teaching and Learning Activities (TLAs), and Assessment Tasks (ATs). During the seminar, there were some activities in which participants were able to define, describe, create, and apply ILOs, TLAs, and ATs within the Outcome-Based Teaching and Learning approach. After the seminar, participants shared with their views and experiences with the speaker. Participants found the seminar very useful and interesting in enhancing their teaching by applying OBTL approach more effectively. A group photo was taken afterwards.

Professional Development Seminar #5: How Augmented Reality(AR)/ Virtual Reality(VR) is Going to Change Teaching and Learning.

In this seminar, Mr. Tarloff Im, Educational Development Officer in EDGE, CityU, introduced the history of development of AR and VR. Then, he showed movies to demonstrate how AR and VR can be applied in different areas such as marketing, training, medical diagnosis and exploration of heritages sites. The challenges and limitations facing AR and VR are discussed. After the presentation, participants discussed actively with the speaker about the future trend of AR and VR. Then, they enjoyed the refreshments and exchanged views with each other to explore further collaboration opportunities.

Professional Development Seminar #4: : Lecturing Made Easy as P.I.E., 24 November 2018

In this seminar, Dr. Paul Corrigan, Senior Educational Development Officer in EDGE, CityU, started his presentation with the value of teaching through lectures. Then, he continued his presentation on how to use the OBTL format to plan lectures (Plan), deliver lectures interactively (Implement) and evaluate the effectiveness of the lecture (Evaluate). Throughout his presentation, Dr. Corrigan posed several stimulating questions for participants to get involved discuss actively together. It was an inspiring, enlightening, informative and entertaining seminar. After the presentation, participants enjoyed the refreshments and exchanged views with each other.

Professional Development Seminar #3: [以愛為教、以專為學] Teaching and Learning Professional Programs with Love and Heart by Professor Joseph Yau, 18 May 2018

In this seminar, Professor Yau gave us a very fruitful and enjoyable speech. He started his speech with a brief introduction of his background, followed by ten techniques on motivating and impressing our younger generation to have a good learning attitude as well as a positive view of life by quoting some real examples from his past teaching experience. The points he covered were so interesting and aspiring that it has opened our eyes as well as minds, especially his perseverance, determination, selfless dedication and devotion in helping students. After his presentation, participants enjoyed the refreshments and exchanged views with each other.

Professional Development Seminar #2: Facilitating Tutorial Discussion Effectively by Dr. Paul Corrigan, Senior Education Development Officer, EDGE, CityU , 16 March 2018

In this seminar, Dr. Corrigan started with a description of what a discussion is. Then, he identified the six types of discussions, explained how to apply five solutions to problems with discussions, four reasons for using discussions, three ways to start discussion, two effects of discussion on student and how to create discussion plan for tutorial. After the seminar, participants exchanged their teaching experience and views with Dr. Corrigan while enjoying the light refreshments outside the classroom.

Professional Development Seminar #1: Outcomes-Based Teaching and Learning (OBTL) for Effective Student Learning by Dr. Louis Ma, Director (SCOPE),12 January 2018

In this seminar, Dr. Ma gave an interesting and fruitful talk on how to apply Outcomes-Based Teaching and Learning (OBTL) approach for effective student learning. At the beginning, Dr. Ma gave an overview of OBTL, followed by a presentation on how to enhance Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO). Finally, he shared his practical experience in OBTL with the participants. After the seminar, participants were served with light refreshments while sharing their experiences and views on OBTL.

Orientation Day for Part-time Teaching Staff, September 2017

An "Orientation Day for Part-time Teaching Staff" was organized in 2015, 2016 and 2017, aiming to enhance the communication between CityU SCOPE and the part-time lecturers. Part-time lecturers as well as full-time academic and administrative staff were invited to join the event. Participants were updated with the latest developments of the School, arrangements on administrative support and staff development courses that were available for part-time lecturers. The event also included a sharing session on specific educational topics, such as “Education beyond Teaching”, “Real Value of Networking” and so on. Participants exchanged ideas on teaching and learning while enjoying light refreshments after the event.
