CityU SCOPE Unveiling Alumni Events in a Musical Night
The school's first Alumni Forum: Classical Music is not Inaccessible was held on 10 June at City University of Hong Kong (CityU). Over 80 alumni, students and staff members joined the event.
The forum was opened by Dr Louis Ma, Acting Director of the School of Continuing and Professional Education (CityU SCOPE) followed by a speech of Ms Yip Wing-sie, Music Director of Hong Kong Sinfonietta.
Ms Yip has long been a highly respected and influential figure in Asia's orchestral music scene. In her speech Ms Yip introduced Hong Kong Sinfonietta and gave an overview of and demonstrated the amazing richness of classical music with footages of the different genres such as concertos, operas, and ballets. Ms Yip also illustrated crossovers of classical compositions in pop and rock songs.
A dialogue session was moderated by Dr Herbert Chiu, Senior Lecturer of Social & Human Sciences Section. Ms Yip shared her insights on how to cultivate children's or adults' interest in classical music and inspired participants to appreciate the aesthetics of classical melody.
During the Question-and-Answer session, participants raised questions ranging from how to learn classical music effectively to Ms Yip's joint concerts with well-known performers in future.
"Listening to classical music brings us many benefits: it connects us to our spiritual nature and brings us peace of mind, which is good in our stressful modern society. It is simply a great source of pleasure for everybody," Ms Yip said.
CityU SCOPE is committed to providing a wide range of activities to alumni to nurture their interest in learning and to strengthen the ties among the University, the School and the alumni community at large.
